Instructions
- 1
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Cook ziti pasta according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- 2
While pasta cooks, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
- 3
Add ground beef to the skillet and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off excess fat.
- 4
Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- 5
In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, parmesan cheese, and egg. Mix well.
- 6
Spread about 1 cup of the meat sauce in the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish. Layer half of the cooked ziti over the sauce. Spread the ricotta mixture evenly over the ziti. Top with another 1 cup of meat sauce and 1 cup of mozzarella cheese.
- 7
Repeat the layers: remaining ziti, remaining meat sauce, and remaining mozzarella cheese.
- 8
Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes, or until bubbly and lightly browned.
