Instructions

  1. 1

In a small bowl, dissolve sugar and yeast in warm water. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.

    5 min

  2. 2

In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and mix until a shaggy dough forms.

  3. 3

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

    5 min

  4. 4

While the dough rises, prepare the garlic butter: Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add minced garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Remove from heat and stir in chopped parsley.

  5. 5

Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 16 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 6-inch rope and tie into a knot. Place knots on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  6. 6

In a small bowl, whisk the egg. Brush the tops of the knots with the beaten egg.

  7. 7

Bake at 400°F for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.

  8. 8

While knots are still warm, brush generously with the prepared garlic parsley butter and sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese.

  9. 9

    Serve immediately.
