
Classic Irish Soda Bread

Preheat oven to 425°F. Grease and lightly flour a baking sheet.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar.

Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk. Mix until just combined; do not overmix. The dough should be shaggy.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently shape into a round loaf.

Place the loaf on the prepared baking sheet. Cut a deep cross into the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.

Bake for 15 minutes at 425°F, then reduce oven temperature to 375°F and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
